For the last 60 years Billboard has charted the top 100 most popular songs in the United States. We wanted to see if any patterns emerged from the top ten songs each week.
Collecting the data for the graphs was done in two steps. First we scraped the Billboard 100 site for the top ten hits for each week from January 1960 to July 2018. Then we used the spotify API to gather metadata for each song. The API was a little picky with song and artist titles so we got about half of the songs from that time period. Overall we got metadata for about 17000 songs.
C, D, A, F, and D major keys have remained popular throughout the years in pop music.
